Winder-Barrow Community Theatre recently presented “Mousetrap” by Agatha Christie, and a portion of the proceeds was donated to the Northeast Georgia Food Bank for the Barrow County Food2Kids Program. Audience members were given information about the program, and they purchased baked goods provided by local teachers and counselors and made donations totaling $525. WBCT also made a donation of $150 towards feeding hungry children. This $675 will be used to provide food for children who might otherwise go hungry on the weekends while school is out.
The Barrow County Food2Kids Program started in 2008 with 8 students receiving a bag of kid friendly food to take home each weekend so that they would have food over the weekend. It had become evident that some children were coming to school very hungry on Monday mornings, and that they could not learn while they were hungry. The Northeast Georgia Food Bank sponsors this program in several surrounding county school systems, and the need continues to grow. Now in Barrow County there are 150 children receiving backpacks of food each Friday , and there are 55 students on the waiting list. The River Hills Church members pack the bags each week for the school counselors to pick up for the children.
If you would like to help sponsor a hungry child, the cost for one child is $260 for the school year. Donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated, and they are also tax deductible. Checks should be made out to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, designated for the Barrow County Food2Kids, and mailed to BCSS, 179 W Athens Street, Winder, GA 30680: Attn: Shannon Derrick.
